Information About the Barnett Family and the Collection

For most of the 20th century the Barnett family was prominent in Batesville, Arkansas’s business and mercantile community.  In 1885, Ira Nelson Barnett II (1866-1935) left his native Sharp County, Arkansas, to go to work in Batesville.  Along with brothers Charles A. and James F., Ira N. Barnett joined the mercantile business of his uncle, R. D. Williams, buying him out in 1895.  In 1903 the three young men established Barnett Brothers Mercantile Company, with Ira N. Barnett as president.  Ira N. Barnett later helped organize the Citizens Bank and Trust Company of Batesville and played an active role in the First Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge.  He was married to Lockie Ball (1869-1955) of Batesville in 1890, and the couple had four children.  Their sons Charles W. and Ira Nelson Barnett III directed Barnett Brothers after their father’s death.  Ira Nelson Barnett III was a 1921 graduate of Lyon (then Arkansas) College and remained a lifelong supporter and longtime trustee of his alma mater.

The collection consists of newspaper clippings and other materials relating to various members of the Barnett family as well as to related families; correspondence; receipts, invoices, sales records, inventories, and other items relating to the Barnett Brothers store; and miscellanea relating to the Barnetts’ involvement with Lyon (Arkansas) College and with a variety of community organizations and institutions.  Most of the store records date from the 1890s to the 1930s; correspondence and other materials date from the 1910s to the 1980s.  (Note:  Some of the college-related materials originally included in the Barnett Collection have been dispersed to other collections, such as the A.C. History files.)

The collection was processed in 1993 by Nancy S. Griffith, and Kim Halpain and Judy Blackwell completed detailed indexing and the website finding aid in 2002.  The collection is open for research.
