Information About Mary Engels and the Collection

Mary Pearl Engels (b. 1912) is a native of Moorefield (Independence County), Arkansas, and a 1944 graduate of Lyon (then Arkansas) College.  In 1953 she earned the M.A. in history from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.  Mary Engels spent thirty-four years teaching in the public school system of Arkansas, the final twenty-five years at Forrest City.

The collection contains a variety of memorabilia and records from Engels’s days as a student at Batesville High School and at Arkansas College and from her career in teaching.  The collection also contains various genealogical records and family-related materials, such as correspondence, photographs, and legal records.

The collection was processed in 1993 by Nancy S. Griffith, and in 2002 Kim Halpain and Judy Blackwell completed detailed indexing and the website finding aid.  The collection is open for research.
