Information About Mary Maxfield and the Collection

Mary Maxfield Fitzhugh (1858-1932) was a lifelong resident of Batesville, Arkansas.  In 1876 she was a member of the first graduating class of Lyon (then Arkansas) College.  Mary Maxfield was married to John Conway Fitzhugh, and they had three children:  John Conway Fitzhugh Jr., Fred Eugene Fitzhugh, and Mary Maxfield Spragins.

The collection consists of photocopies of two scrapbooks kept by Mary Maxfield Fitzhugh.  The scrapbooks consist primarily of newspaper clippings from local papers.  Entries in the first scrapbook date from 1889 to 1918, and the second one from 1910 to 1920.  The collection also contains an index made up of 3”X5” note cards in a small box.

The collection was processed and indexed in 1994 by Nancy S. Griffith, and in 2002 Kim Halpain and Judy Blackwell completed the website finding aid.  The collection is open for research.
