Once I had a pretty little girl,
Pretty as she could be.
I thought sure she'd be my wife;
Dearly she loved me.
Dearly she loved me;
Dearly she loved me.
I thought sure she'd be my wife;
Dearly she loved me.

Took her out to see a ball;
Thought I'd have some fun.
I introduced her to my friends;
She stood and chewed her gum.
Stood and chewed her gum,
Stood and chewed her gum.
I introduced her to my friends;
She stood and chewed her gum.

I proposed and she accept;
The wedding day had come.
The preacher stood to tie the knot;
She stood and chewed her gum.
Stood and chewed her gum;
She stood and chewed her gum.
The preacher stood to tie the knot;
She stood and chewed her gum.

The preacher left, and I went home.
It wasn't very much fun,
But I said I'd never marry a girl
Fond of chewing gum.
Fond of chewing gum,
Fond of chewing gum.
Said I'd never marry a girl
Fond of chewing gum.

(Dr. Wolf: "Where'd you learn that one?"
Mrs. Apple: "I think I must have been about eight years old. We had a neighbor, a girl that could play a guitar, and she'd come to our home and sing, and she knew this song, and I learned the song from her."
Dr. Wolf: "I see. Who was she?"
Mrs. Apple: "A girl named Willie Moore.")
