(Mrs. Apple: This song is more than a hundred years old. It was brought to Arkansas from Oklahoma, from the Indian Territory, and it was taught to me by an elderly lady.”)

In the wilds of Arizona
There once lived an Indian chieftain,
And he loved an Indian maiden.
Every night beside her wigwam
This tune big chief sing and play:

Chorus: “Big chief love little Kickapoo maiden,
Love her heap much, too.
Yes, indeed, he do.
Big chief heart grows heap much pitty-pat,
When he thinks of you.
Big chief go on the warpath maybe,
If your love is true.”

One night at the Indian powwow
She returned his rattlesnake ring.
Big chief drank a firewater,
Goes on the warpath far away,
Kill ten thousand million Indians
With Buffalo Bill.

(Chorus)
