JUST A LONELY COWBOY Sung by: Mr. and Mrs. F.E. Ash Recorded in Evening Shade, AR 6/30/59 Click here to listen to the original recording With heart so brave and true. He learned to love a maiden With eyes of heav'n so blue. They learned to love each other And named their wedding day, When a quarrel came between them, And Jackie rode away. Your sweetheart waits for you, Jack, Your sweetheart waits for you; Out on the lonely prairie, Your sweetheart waits for you. He joined a band of cowboys And tried to forget her name. Out on the lonely prairie She waits for him the same. One night when work was ended,      (Mr. Ash sings "when work was over.") Just at the close of day, Someone said, "Sing a song, Jack, 'Twill drive all care away." As Jack began his singing, His mind, it wandered back, So he sang of a lovely maiden, Who waited for her Jack. Jack left the camp next morning, A-breathing his sweetheart's name. "I'll go and ask forgiveness, For I know I was to blame." But when he reached the prairie, He found a newmade mound, And his friends all sadly told him They laid his loved one down. They said when she was dying She breathed her sweetheart's name, And asked him with her last breath To tell him when he came: That your sweetheart waits for you, Jack, Your sweetheart waits for you, Out on the lonely prairie, Where the skies are always blue. |
