Go beat the drum slowly
And play the fife . . .
And play the dead march
As they carry me home.
Take me to the churchyard
And roll the sod o'er me,
For I'm a young cowboy
And I know I've done wrong.

Once in the saddle,
I used to go riding,
And once in my saddle
I used to go gay.
I first began drinking,
And then to card-playing,
And then in the churchyard,
You see I must lay.
