[A verse of this tune is played on the fiddle, and then a verse is spoken without accompaniment.]

“Hey, old man, why don’t you cover your house?"
“Well, it’s a-raining.”
“Why don’t you cover it when it’s not a-raining?”
“Well, it don’t need it then.”

“Hey, old man, how far . . . where does this road go to?”
“Well, I’ve been living here twenty years, and it’s not gone anywhere yet.”

“Hey, old man, how far is it to Little Rock?”
“Well, I don’t know how far it is to Little Rock, but there’s a hell of a big rock down here in Paul’s field.”

“Hey, old man, what’s the idea for having just three chickens here?”
“Well, it takes two to hold up the rock while the other’n gets the worm.”

“Hey, old man, head that cow.”
“Well, she’s headed.”
“I mean, speak to her.”
“Howdy, cow.”
“I mean, turn her.”
“Well, the hairy side’s out.”

“Hey, old man, can you ford this creek?”
“Yeah, I guess you can; ducks and geese do.”

“Hey, old man, how did your taters turn out?”
“Well, they didn’t turn out. Me and Sal had to dig ‘em out.”

“Hey, old man, what caused that corn to be so yellow?”
“Well, we planted the yellow kind.”

“Well, it looks like you just got a half a crop here.”
“Well, all I intend to have. The landlord gets the other half.”

"Now let’s finish our little trip down in Arkansas."
