I'll sing you a song,
A pretty song--
It's sweet but yet, oh, how sad--
Of a cruel-hearted woman
Whose heart was carved with stone,
And oh, how she flirted with a lad.

Chorus: It was on an old stump,
They sat side by side,
And the beautiful field beneath their feet.
They would whisper words of love
As the birds sang above,
Words that was tender, low and sweet.

"Gave me a rose,
A pretty white rose,
You asked me to wear it for you.
I have that rose yet;
I never shall forget
To wear it as long as you are true."

(Chorus)

Found him next day,
In a cold, cold stream,
Where he threw himself in to drown
With the rose between his teeth,
As if he seemed to say,
"I want to wear this rose in my crown."
