On a bright moonlight night,
As the stars shining bright,
Two young lovers stroll down by a stream.
Said the maid with a smile,
As she crossed o'er a stile,
"Why bring me this way home, Joe?"
Joe says in reply,
"I'll tell you why,
The reason I brought you this way.
Oh, the longest way 'round
Is the sweetest way home.
Old road makes us part too soon.
The long way is the wrong way,
The short way is the right way.
All lovers go that way to spoon.
Longest way 'round
Is the sweetest way home.
That's why that I brought you this way, dear."

Just a year from that day,
Both of them chanced to stroll,
To a stream by an old water mill,
Where she says to him, "Dear,
We've been married a year,
And seem just like two sweethearts still.
Now, on our way home,
Just for old times' sake, Joe,
Let's go the long way once again."
Joe says in reply,
"All right, dear, but why?"
She answered to him with a smile:
"Oh, the longest way 'round
Is the sweetest way home.
All lovers go that way to spoon.
Oh, the long way is the wrong way,
Short way is the right way,
That's why that we're coming this way.
Longest way 'round
Is the sweetest way home.
Why that I brought you this way, dear."
