Look down the Mississippi, see the steamer Whippoorwill,
Commanded by the pilot, Mr. Steamboat Bill.
Commander give the orders to a strict V.T.,
To try and beat the record of the Robert E. Lee.

Chorus: Steamboat Bill, steaming down the Mississippi,
Steamboat Bill, a mighty man was he.
Steamboat Bill, steaming down the Mississippi,
Trying to beat the record of the Robert E. Lee.

Stepped a gambling man from Louisville,
Trying to get a bet against the Whippoorwill.
Bill flashed a . . . it surely was a bear;
The boiler exploded, blowed him up in the air.

(Chorus)

The gambler says to Bill as they left the wreck,
"I don't know where we're going, but we're neck to neck."
Bill says to the gambler, "I'll tell you what I'll do.
I'll bet you another thousand I'll go higher than you."
