(Mr. Detherow: ". . . Detherow . . . Batesville, Arkansas, age 78. I'm going to sing some of the old-fashioned play songs. They were called ring plays; they were a substitute for square dance, and up 'til about forty or fifty years ago, they were the main entertainment for the young folks of the people, of the country. I'm going to sing 'Jump Josie.'")

We're going down the river,
We're going down the river,
Going down the river
To old Shi-le-oh.

Four in a ring, and I can't jump Josie,
Four in a ring, and I can't jump Jo.
Four in a ring, and I can't jump Josie,
Oh, that Susie girl.

Wouldn't give a nickel if I couldn't jump Josie,
Wouldn't give a nickel if I couldn't jump Jo.
Wouldn't give a nickel if I couldn't jump Josie,
Oh, that Susie girl.

Fiddler's drunk and he can't play Josie,
Fiddler's drunk and he can't play Jo.
Fiddler's drunk and he can't play Josie,
Oh, that Susie girl.

Get out of the ring if you can't jump Josie,
Get out of the ring if you can't jump Jo.
Get out of the ring if you can't jump Josie,
Oh, that Susie girl.

(Mr. Detherow: "Now, this play is played with a bunch of about twelve, fifteen, or twenty; ring up and they'll have two in the center. As they'd go around, they'd choose. Each girl and boy chooses a partner in, and makes four in the middle, and they'll sing do-si leader just like they do in a square dance, and the others all sings and dances around. It's called 'Jump Josie'.")
