Come, all young people, a story I've told.
A comical story I'll surely unfold.
I went to Missouri when I was twenty years old,
Way down, down, way down, dirty down.

I stopped at a place to stay all night;
My breakfast and supper, I thought it all right.
The table was set and the knickknacks spread;
It was hoecake and hominy and a possum's head.
Way down, down, way down, dirty down.

When supper was over and all had fed
On hoecake and hominy and a possum's head,
The straw was stirred and the sheepskin spread.
"And now," says the old man, "We'll all go to bed."
Way down, down, way down, dirty down.

I went to bed expecting some ease;
I scarce could sleep for the lice and the fleas.
The lice, they did bite and the fleas, they did crawl;
It was enough to aggravate any human at all.
Way down, down, way down, dirty down.

I rolled and I tumbled all the night;
I kicked them and I cuffed them with all my might.
I scarcely could scratch them as fast as they'd bite,
Way down, down, way down, dirty down.

Now, old Missouri, I'll bid you farewell,
Go back to Arkansas where I used to dwell,
Where the girls was all rarin' and tearin' their hair
For the loss of a true love when I left there.
Way down, down, way down, dirty down.
