I'll sing a little song--
It won't take me very long--
About my life concerning,
About the beaver cap I wore
Before my locks were turning.

Chorus: Oh, sing true, fa la, sing wax,
Fa la, sing true a la la lay.

I went to town that very day
To buy me a hat, sir.
The very first thing they showed to me
Was a broad-brimmed beaver cap, sir.

(Chorus)

I bought that hat; I took it home,
And placed it on my bed, sir,
And every time that I woke up,
I set it on my head, sir.

(Chorus)

I went to work the very next day,
A-feeling very sad, sir.
When I got home, my mother had a hen
Set in my beaver cap, sir.

(Chorus)

I picked them eggs up one by one;
I guess I had some fun, sir.
I tossed them at my mother's back;
I hit her as she run, sir.

(Chorus)

My daddy come home that very night;
You bet he made me hop, sir.
He raised big blisters on my back
With my old beaver cap, sir.

(Chorus)

He beat me and banged me; he swore he would hang me.
He troubled me out of my life, sir,
And all the remedy I could find
Was to marry me a wife, sir.

(Chorus)

I . . . them gals; I hugged them gals,
And . . . them on my lap, sir.
They's all the time a-picking the fur
Of my old beaver cap, sir.

(Chorus)

I married me a wife; she was a dove,
The jolly of my life, sir,
Until one day, she abused
My old beaver cap, sir.

(Chorus)

She raised a row that very day,
And took me by the nap, sir.
Tossed me out into the yard,
And stomped my beaver cap, sir.

(Chorus)
