Well, I sent my son John out one day
For to hunt the old gray mare-o.
He was gone, and he was gone.
Well, I got uneasy about my son John,
And I went out for to hunt my son John,
And where do you reckon I found my son John?
Sitting way down yonder on an old hollow log,
Picking on an old . . . banjo,
And the tune went so, so.
“Patty, won’t you drink some,
Patty, won’t you drink some,
Patty, won’t you drink some good old cider?
You be the gray horse, and I’ll be the rider,
And we’ll go to Bailey Watson’s and get some cider.”
