As Dinah was walking the garden one day,
She saw her dear Papa, and thus he did say:
“Go dress yourself, Dinah, in gorgeous array,
And choose you a husband both gallant and gay.”

“Oh, no, dearest Papa, I’ve not made up my mind.
To marry just yet, I don’t feel inclined.
To you my large fortune I’ll gladly give o’er
If you’ll let me stay single a year or two more.”

“Go, go, dearest daughter,” the parent replied.
“If you don’t consent to be this young man’s bride,
I’ll give your large fortune to the nearest of kin,
And you shan’t reap the benefit of one single pin.”

Sing tura-la-lura-la-lura-la-lie,
Sing tura-la-lura-la-lura-la-lie,
Sing tura-la-lura-la-lura-la-lie,

As Wilkins was walking the garden around,
He saw his dear Dinah lying dead on the ground.
The cup of cold poison, it lay by her side,
And the billet doux said ‘twas of poison she died.

He kissed her cold corpse a thousand times o’er,
And he called her his Dinah, though she was no more,
Then he swallowed the poison like a lover so brave,
And Wilkins and Dinah both lay in one grave.

Sing tura-la-lura-la-lura-la-lie,
Sing tura-la-lura-la-lura-la-lie,
Sing tura-la-lura-la-lura-la-lie,
Sing tura-la-lura-la-lura-la-lie.

(Comment by Dr. Wolf: “Mrs. Garrott learned ‘Wilkins and Dinah’ from her mother.”)
