(Dr. Wolf: "The next song, 'I long to Lie, Dear Mother,' is sung by Mrs. Guthrie, who learned it from her mother, Mrs. Maxfield.")

Oh, I long to lie, dear Mother,
On the cool and fragrant grass,
With the clear blue sky above my head
And the shadowy clouds that pass.
I want the bright, bright sunshine
All 'round about my head;
I'll close my eyes and God will think
Your little boy is dead.

And Christ will send his angels
To take me up to Him.
They'll bear me slow and tenderly
Up through the ether dim.
And they'll gently, gently . . . me
Close by the Master's side,
And when I'm sure that I'm in Heaven
My eyes I'll open wide.

I'll look among the angels
That stand around the throne,
'Til I find my sister, Mary,
For I'm sure she must be one.
And when I've found her, Mother,
We'll go away alone,
And I'll tell her how we've longed for her
All the while that she's been gone.

And then I'll ask the angels
To take me back to you.
They bear me slow and tenderly
Down through the ether blue.
And you'll only think, dear Mother,
That I've been out to play
And have gone to sleep beneath the stars,
This sultry summer day.
