Three years ago, when Jack and Joe
Set sail across the foam,
Each vowed a fortune they would gain
Before returning home.

In one year, Jack gained his wealth
And sailed for home that day,
And when he came to say goodbye,
Poor Joe could only say:

"Give my love to Nell, Jack,
And kiss her once for me.
The fairest girl in all this world
I know you'll say 'tis she.

"Treat her kindly, Jack, old boy,
And tell her I am well,
And when you've met, oh, don't forget
To give my love to Nell."
