As I walked out in the streets of Laredo,
As I walked out in the streets one day,
I spied a young cowboy wrapped up in white linen,
Wrapped up in white linen and as cold as the clay.

“I see by your outfit that you’re a young cowboy,
Got shot through the breast, and dying today.
“Go beat the fife lowly and play the drum slowly,
And play the dead march while they carry me along.
Oh, carry me to the cemetery and roll the sod o’er me,
For I’m a young cowboy, and I know I’ve done wrong.”
