The stars were shining brightly,
The moon was shining too,
When through a cottage window,
A jealous lover drew.

"Come, love, and let us wander
Down by the meadow gate,
And in the hours of pondering
We'll name our wedding date."

Deep, deep, down in the valley
He led his future wife,
When suddenly behind him
She saw the shining knife.

"These woods seem dark and dreary
And I'm afraid to roam."
"You can say farewell forever
To your parents and friends at home."

"What have I done, dear Edward,
That you would take my life?
You know how much I love you,
And would have been your wife."

"You told me that you loved me;
You knew it was a lie.
You know you've been unfaithful.
Floella, you must die."

Down on her knees before him,
She pleaded for her life.
Into her snow-white bosom
He plunged the fatal knife.

The birds sang through the valley,
And mournful were their songs,
When they found their own Floella
Lying lifeless on the ground.

She died not brokenhearted,
Nor over a lingering spell,
But in one moment parted
From the one she loved so well.

(Dr. Wolf: "She learned this song from her mother just as she did the other one [Alice Mitchell and Freddy Ward].")
