It's once in my saddle I used to go dashing,
It's once in my saddle I used to ride gay.
I first up to drinking, and then to card-playing.
Got shot by a gambler; now dying I lay.
Go beat your drum slowly, go play your violy,
Go beat the dead marches as you carry me away.
Go carry me to the graveyard, there lay the grave o'er me.
I am a young cowboy; God knows I've done wrong.

Go write me a letter to my gray-headed mother,
And one to my brother and sister so dear,
But there is another more dear than brother
Who'd weep if she knew I was dying out here.
