There was an old farmer who lived on a hill;
If he ain't moved off, he's a-living there still.

Chorus: Sing fal dal, fal dal addeling, addeling day.

He hitched up his hog, and he went out to plow;
How he got along, I couldn't tell how.

(Chorus)

Looked at the old devil coming 'cross the field,
Saying, "Coming after you nor your oldest son,
But your old . . . woman for the sins she's done."

(Chorus)

Well, he picked her up on his old . . . back,
And he looked like a peddler with a hump on his back.

(Chorus)

Well, he carried her to the forks of the road,
Saying, "Get down, old lady, you're an awful load."

(Chorus)

Well, she picked up a stick and hit him on the back.
Said, "Get on, old lady, I'll roast you for that."

(Chorus)

Well, he carried her to the gates of Hell,
Saying, "Get down, old lady; here's your place."

(Chorus)

Well, she picked up a . . . and split out his brains
. . .

(Chorus)

Well, three little devils came a-scaling a wall,
Saying, "Take her back, Daddy, she'll murder us all."

(Chorus)

Well, he picked her up on his old . . . back,
Started back with a hump on his back.

(Chorus)

When . . . said, "Old farmer, here's your wife."
Said, "She . . .out the devil and a husband, too."
Said, "The Devil don't have her, I don't know who will."

(Comment by Mr. Hawkins: "I didn't get that in there just right.")
