About the age of sixteen,
I joined the . . . band.
We marched from San Antonio,
Unto the Rio Grande.

We marched for full nine hours
Before our strife was o'er.
So many of the dead and the wounded
I never saw before.

We fought for full nine hours
Before our strife was o'er.
So many of the dead and the wounded
I never saw before.

We fought for . . .

(Comment by Mrs. Hensley: "Let's see . . . I got mixed up. You help me.")

We saw them Yankees coming,
We heard them gather . . .
. . .
No human's tongue can tell.

We fought for full nine hours
Before our strife was o'er.
So many of the dead and the wounded
I never saw before.

May this be your situation,
Although you like to roam.
My advice to all you boys:
You'd better stay at home.

(Comment by Mrs. Hensley: "Now, ain't that just awful?")
