While strolling down the street one eve
Upon a pleasant . . .
'Twas after the business part of day--
I met a girl who shrank from me
And whom I recognized,
A schoolmate in a village far away.

"Is that you, Madge?" I said to her.
She quickly turned away.
"Don't turn away from me, for I'm your friend.
I'm going back next week
To see the old folks, and I thought
Perhaps a message you would like to send."

"Just tell them that you saw me,
And they will know the rest,
And tell them that I'm looking well, you know.
Whisper if you get a chance
To mother dear, and say
I love her as I did long years ago."

"Your cheeks looks pale; your eyes looks dim.
Come, tell me if you will--
When last we met, your eyes looked clear and bright.
Come, go home as I go, Madge;
The change will do you good.
Your mother wonders where you are tonight."

"I long to see them once again,
But not just yet," she said.
"'Tis pride alone that's keeping me away.
Tell mother not to worry--
That I am well, you know--
And tell her that I'm coming home some day."
