The sun that set behind yon mountain,
Oh, that dreary land!
And up the lane the lad that came
Unto the farmer's door.

"Kind sir, can you tell me if any there be
To give to me employ,
For to plow or to sow or to reap or to mow
Or to be your farmer's boy?

"Can you shelter me 'til the break of day,
'Til first cold winter blast?"
"Oh yes, kind sir," his daughter said,
As the tears rolled down her cheeks.

In course of time this lad grew a man,
And the good old farmer died;
And he left to the lad the farm that he had,
And his daughter for the bride.

Oh lucky, lucky day that came that a-way
To be a farmer's boy.
