I am getting old and feeble;
I cannot work no more.
I've laid the rusted bladed hoe to rest.
While old Master and old Mistress
      are slaving side by side,
My spirit's ever rolling with the blest.

Chorus: Yet I feel so very happy,
I'm singing all the day,
As I labor in the sunshine and the rain,
But the only one I'm loving,
That little girl of mine,
And I promised her I'd never drink again.

Well, I see a change of . . .
The darkies am all gone.
I cannot hear them singing in the cane
As they used to sing and dance
And pick and play that old banjo,
But at last I cannot hear them any more.

(Chorus)

Well, the hinges am all rusting,
The doors am falling down.
The roof lets in the sunshine and the rain,
But the only friend that loves me,
That good old dog of mine,
In our little log cabin in the lane.

(Chorus)

(Fiddle Tune: "The Eighth of January")
