(Mrs. Peel: "Now, 'In battle.' Now, begin that 'In battle,' and don't look at your paper. Just think about it and sing it.")

In battle roamed each warlike band,
And . . . their trumpet blew.
Young Edward left his native land,
A drummer boy for Waterloo.

They went beneath the set of sun
With flashing arms and rolling guns.
A flash of death, their murderous gun
Now laid him low at Waterloo.

"There's comrades come," young Edward cried,
And proudly beamed his eyes of blue.
Go tell my mother Edward died
A drummer boy at Waterloo."

(Mrs. Peel: "They placed his head . . .")

They placed his head all on a drum
Beneath the moonlight's mournful hue.

(Mrs. Peel: "The night was still.")

The night was still, their battle hummed.
They dug his grave at Waterloo.
