There is a path by the long-deserted mill,
And a stream by the old bridge broken sill,
Where Laura, my beautiful, sat by me
On the green mossy banks beneath the old elm tree.

Chorus: "Laura, dear Laura, my heart's true love,
We will meet again with the angels above.
Earth holds not a treasure so dear to me
As the green mossy banks beneath the old elm tree."

It was there while the blossoms of summer died,
It was there that I begged her to be my bride,
But ere I'd returned from the deep blue sea,
They had made her a grave beneath the old elm tree.

She died, and they parted her sunny hair
On her cold pale brow death had left so fair.
Then cruel and sad were the tales they told,
That my love was false, and my true love was cold.

That my fondest love held another dear,
Forgetting the vows that were whispered here.
She died and they laid her there to rest,
On the green mossy banks beneath the old elm tree.

(Chorus)
