“You've asked what makes this darky weep,
Why he, like others am not gay,
What makes the tears roll down my cheek
From early dawn to close of day?
My story, darkies, you shall hear,
For on my memory . . . it dwells.
‘Twill cause you all to drop a tear
On the grave of my sweet Kitty Wells.

Chorus: When the moon is a-shining down from Heaven,
And the whippoorwill is singing in the dell,
I bow my head by her graveside,
And tell my love to Kitty Wells.

I never shall forget the day
When we together on the dell.
I kissed her cheek and named the day
That I would marry Kitty Wells,
But death came in our cabin door
And took from me my joy, my pride,
And when I found she was no more,
I laid my banjo down and cried.

(Chorus)

I’ve often wished that I were dead,
And laid beside her in the tomb.
The sorrow that bows down my head
Lays silent in the midnight gloom,
For springtime has no charms for me,
The flowers a-blooming in the dell,
But that sweet form I do not see,
The form of my sweet Kitty Wells.

(Chorus)
