Young Charlotte lived on a mountainside,
In a lone and dreary spot.
No other house for five miles around,
Except her own father's cot.

'Twas New Year's Eve, and the sun was low,
And beamed her wandering eyes,
And to the frozen window she watched
To watch the sleighs pass by.

Still weary beamed her wandering eyes,
'Til his well-known bell she heard,
And running up to the cottage door,
Young Charles in his sleigh appeared.

"Oh, daughter, daughter," her mother cried,
"This blanket around you fold.
Such a dreadful night abroad,
You'll catch your death of cold."

She then had on her bonnet and shawl,
And stepped into the sleigh,
And they drove along the mountainside,
And o'er the hills away.

"Mother, mother," the daughter cried,
And laughed like a gypsy queen,
"To ride in a blanket all muffled up,
I never could be seen."
