Miss Dare, since I came to this city,
I find I changed my mind.
I hope you won't think I'm fickle,
Nor deem me the least unkind.

I'm sure we both were mistaken--
I know you would never suit me;
And now, since my heart is another's,
Miss Dare, I hope you'll agree.

Please send back the ring I gave you.
I think it is only fair,
So please be so kind as to free me
From a-flirting, Lily Dare.

Send me the locket I gave you,
Also my letters and books.
I close with all good wishes,
Respectfully yours, Charlie Brooks.

Dear Charlie, I got your letter,
The last one you ever wrote me.
I read it over and over,
And of course, kind friend, I'll agree.

I heard all about it, dear Charlie,
And knew it would end up this way.
I hope you'll always be happy
With the fair young heiress, Miss Gray.

Here is your ring, dear Charlie.
Don't give it to her, I pray,
Unless you tell her 'twas once mine;
I've worn it a year today.

Twelve months have passed, dear,
So happy and gay were we both.
You vowed you would never forsake me,
And I find you untrue to your oath.

Here is your picture, dear Charlie.
It's almost faded away,
Because I've kissed it so often,
And this you may tell Miss Gray.

Here's your last letter, dear Charlie.
Others I burned as they came,
In fear that reading them over
Would cause old love to flame.

And here is a bunch of violets,
Which once were curly and blue.
You sent them to me as an emblem,
And now I return them to you.

And now I must say goodbye, dear;
I hope you will think I've been fair,
And remember I'm always and always
As ever, your friend, Lily Dare.
