John Holland was a-standing in a barroom door,
Not a-paying any attention to the game,
When along come a woman with a one-dollar bill;
Said, "I betcha John Holland in the game, game, game;
I'll betcha John Holland in the game."

Now John planked down a two-dollar bill.
He said, "One dollar and no more,
And the man that gets that two-dollar bill,
I'll gamble with my Colt's 44, 4, 4;
I'll gamble with my Colt's 44."

"Oh, John, my son, oh, what have you done
That you're on the gallows so high?"
"I shot two men in a poker game,
And now I'm bound for to die, die, die;
And now I'm bound for to die."

John Holland, he had him a pretty little girl,
And the dress she wore was red.
She come tripping down the old jail hall, saying;
"Daddy, I wish I was dead, dead, dead.
Oh, Daddy, I wish I was dead."

John Holland, he had him a pretty little wife,
And the dress she wore was blue.
The last words John Holland heard her say was:
"I've been true to you, you, you,
Oh, I've been true to you."

"Now I've been to the East, I've been to the West,
I've even been to London town.
I've kissed the woman that I love best.
Now I'm ready for my hole in the ground, ground, ground;
Now I'm ready for my hole in the ground."
