Once I had a sweetheart,
Gentle, brave, and true,
Noble as the sun rose,
Gentle as the dew.
We had loved and waited;
We had named the day.
We had pledged to wed each other
In the month of May,
When out on the high seas he sailed
Under the red, white, and blue,
Faithful to captain and crew,
Under the red, white, and blue.

When the battle ended,
When the war was through,
We had pledged to wed each other:
"I'll come home to you,"
When down went the Battleship Maine,
Down went the captain and crew,
Faithful to God and you,
Faithful to captain and crew.
