Jolly was the miller and he lived by the mill . . .

(Mrs. Vaughan: “This was a game that we used to play kind of like a promenade. And when we were playing it, we would sing this.”)

Jolly was the miller, and he lived by the mill,
And the mill turned around with a right good will.
One hand in the hopper, and the other in the sack,
Ladies step forward, and the gents step back.

Mama killed a chicken, and she thought it was a duck,
And she put it on the table with its hind legs up.
The right foot forward and the left foot back,
Ladies step forward, and the gents step back.
