Tiger, dear Mother, keep Tiger for me.
Little master will soon be dead.
Speak to him often and softly of Joe,
Gently shaking his shaggy black head.
And what will the kitten do, Mother, all alone?
Will he stop his frolic for a day?
Will he lie on my rug by the side of my bed
As he did in the summer long ago?
And what will the birds do, Mother, when I’m gone?
Will they stop their singing before day?
Will they fly by my window or hop on the sill
As they did in the springtime long ago?
And what will the gardener do, Mother, all alone,
When you ask him for flowers for me?
