(Mrs. Vaughan: “I’m Mrs. Russell Vaughan at Memphis, Tennessee, and I’d like to sing a song that my mother used to sing years ago when she was a little girl. It was a game they played at their parties. It was a kind of a dance, and of course when the fiddlers started out, then this is what they would sing.”)

Some can dance the figure of one;
Some have money and some have none.

Chorus: Shoo roo, shoo rye roo,
Shoo rye shacka rye,
Shoo monkey roo.
Sweet William in the morning,
Mockey roo.

Some can dance the figure of two,
Some wear red, and some wear blue.

(Chorus)

Some can dance the figure of three,
I love you and you love me.

(Chorus)

Some can dance the figure of four,
Some dance on the wall, and some on the floor.

(Chorus)

Some can dance the figure of five,
Some act dead, and some alive.

(Chorus)

(Comment by Mrs. Vaughan: “And this went on ‘til up about the figure of ten or twelve, and then when the dance was over, or they were tired of that game, then they played another.”)

Some can dance the figure of eight,
Some come early, and some come late.

(Chorus)

Some can dance the figure of nine,
Some do bad, and some do fine.

(Chorus)

Some can dance the figure of ten,
Some are ladies, and some are men.

(Chorus)

(Comment by Mrs. Vaughan: “Well, we played it, kind of, uh, choosing our partners, and dancing around in a circle, you know, and singing, and then some would go to the middle, and stand a while, you know, and some would come out and choose a partner, and just kind of a little game. It’s been so long since I’ve played it, I’ve just about forgot just what all maneuvers we did go through. It was really more of a little, kind of a little dance, in a little ring, like, you know. And everybody singing, uh huh.”)
