It was early in the springtime,
In the month of May;
A young man in deep sorrow,
From home he went away.
His parents locked in slumber,
He bid his last farewell.
The agony he suffered
No human's tongue could tell.

Chorus: He sank beneath the wave,
No mother there to save,
No father's hand to help him,
He filled a water's grave.

He left a lonely brother
And friends to mourn his loss,
His broken-hearted parents
To bear a heavy cross.
I pray the God of Mercy
To pity such a sight
And send a holy angel
To make their burdens light.

(Chorus)
